Applications
Port State Control officers routinely inspect the correct functioning of onboard sewage treatment plants. Deficiencies relating to these plants very frequently appear on inspection reports and can lead to costly detentions. Similarly, Flag State Administrations prescribe periodic assessments of sewage treatment plants, while Classification Societies also conduct surveys of these systems.
Sewage treatment plants are sensitive systems that can easily become unbalanced, for example, through the underdosing or overdosing of chemicals.
Vecom Marine’s TEST KIT SEWAGE TREATMENT enables crew to identify errors before an official inspection. It was specifically designed in accordance with the testing standards set out in IMO regulations MEPC.2(VI), MEPC.159(55) and MEPC.227(64). This provides crew with a cost-efficient way to carry out tests similar to those performed by certified testing organisations and identify any issues before an inspection. Furthermore, the mere presence of this kit onboard demonstrates the vessel’s commitment to regulatory compliance, which is a significant factor in an inspector’s decision to exclude minor issues from an official deficiency list.
IMO regulations MEPC.2 (VI), MEPC.159 (55) and MEPC.227 (64) contain the following testing requirements for sewage effluent, to be carried out during a period of at least 10 days:
| Accepted test results | ||||
| Standards as per MEPC.2(VI), MEPC.159(55) and MEPC.227(64) |
Treatment plants installed before 1/1/2020: | Treatment plants installed on or after 1/1/2020: | Passenger ships intending to discharge into Baltic Sea: | Minimum # sample tests |
| Thermotolerant coliforms (faecal coliforms) | Not more than 250 coliforms/100ml | Not more than 100 coliforms/100ml | Not more than 100 coliforms/100ml | 40 |

The TEST KIT SEWAGE TREATMENT facilitates complete and efficient testing of sewage effluent from treatment plants installed on or after 1 January 2020, as well as those from before 2020. The kit does not include the nitrogen and phosphorus tests that are needed for passenger ships in the Baltic Sea.
Test kit contents
TEST KIT SEWAGE TREATMENT comprises the following tests:
| Test subject | Testing method | Number of tests | Compliant with regulations |
| Thermotolerant coliforms (faecal coliforms) | Colilert Test | 50 | Yes |
| Total Suspended Solids (TSS) | Turbidity Tube | Unlimited | Yes |
| Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) | Permanganate Value Test | 41 | Yes |
| Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) | Permanganate Value Test | 41 | Yes |
